Job Description About the role

The Manager, International Tax Reporting and Compliance will assist with the international and Canadian tax reporting and compliance function, which includes foreign affiliate reporting, surplus balances, adjust cost base (ACB) and foreign accrual property income (FAPI) calculations.

What will you do?
  • Preparing FAPI calculations for tax returns and quarterly tax provision purposes
  • Maintaining tax attributes of Sun Life's foreign affiliates, such as ACB and surplus balances
  • Analyzing excluded property status of relevant foreign affiliates
  • Supporting Global Tax Advisory in developing, evaluating and implementing tax strategies to minimize Sun Life's tax liability worldwide
  • Keeping apprised of changes in accounting and financial reporting and tax law to ensure tax implications are understood and communicated
  • Performing tax research and interpretation of the impact of specific issues and/or transactions
  • Preparing formal responses to queries from tax authorities
  • Working with junior staff and/or outsourcers
  • Responsibility for tax reporting and tax compliance for certain Canadian legal entities as required
What do you need to succeed?
  • A minimum of four (4) years of experience in tax including at least two (2) years in public accounting with Canadian international tax compliance and/or consulting experiences
  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree - preferrable in Accounting or a related field of study.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian Controlled Foreign Corporate (CFC) regime, including provisions in the Income Tax Act and Regulations regarding foreign affiliate tax rules
  • Working well in a team; ability to collaborate with cross-functional team members and communicate clearly and efficiently.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and planning skills; ability to attend to details and identify levers and deliver on opportunities
  • Good project management skills, with ability to coordinate workflow for outsourcing arrangements and secondments
  • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, presentations) with the ability to communicate cross functionally
  • Experience with Excel (proficient with Pivot Tables and V/X-look ups)
Preferred Skills
  • Holding a CPA designation is an asset
  • Financial institutions taxation experience, including complex multinational corporations and financing structures, acquisitions, divestitures and reorganizations, is an asset
  • Experience with Gen AI tools (Ex. Microsoft Copilot)

Salary Range: 90,000/ - 140,000/
