Job Description Job Description

Assembly Technician / Production Technician
Pay: $20-$22 per hour, plus overtime at time-and-a-half
Environment: Non-Union Manufacturing

The Opportunity

Our client is an established Northeast Ohio manufacturer of specialized electrical equipment used by utilities, industrial facilities and manufacturing companies.

We are seeking a hands-on Assembly Technician / Production Technician to help build specialized electrical equipment and assemblies.

This is not a typical high-volume assembly-line position where someone performs the same simple task all day. The equipment being built is specialized, and the work requires someone who is mechanically inclined, good with their hands and comfortable figuring out how components and assemblies fit together.

The right person enjoys building things, solving problems and taking pride in seeing a finished piece of equipment come together.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Assemble specialized electrical and mechanical equipment and components.
  • Read and follow drawings, work instructions, bills of materials and assembly information.
  • Troubleshoot problems that come up during the assembly process.
  • Determine how components fit together when an assembly is not completely straightforward.
  • Work with electrical components, hardware, enclosures and manufactured assemblies.
  • Use common hand and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Operate basic fabrication equipment used during the assembly process.
  • Assist with material movement, staging and organization as needed.
  • Load, unload and move materials using a tow motor/forklift.
  • Identify incorrect, damaged or missing components and communicate problems to the appropriate team member.
  • Help maintain an organized, clean and safe production environment.
  • Support other production activities as needed to meet customer delivery requirements.

What We're Looking For

We are looking for someone who is mechanically inclined and genuinely enjoys working with their hands.

Good candidates may come from backgrounds such as:

  • Electrical equipment assembly
  • Industrial or specialized manufacturing
  • Mechanical assembly
  • Machine or equipment assembly
  • Industrial maintenance
  • Electrical manufacturing
  • Automotive or mechanical repair
  • Skilled trades
  • Manufacturing production

Previous experience building specialized electrical or industrial equipment would be particularly valuable.

A college degree is not required. Hands-on ability, mechanical aptitude, dependability and the ability to learn are much more important.

Skills That Would Be a Plus

Experience with any of the following would be helpful:

  • Electrical or mechanical assembly
  • Reading basic drawings or work instructions
  • Hand and power tools
  • Tow motor or forklift operation
  • Punching equipment
  • Bending equipment
  • Material handling
  • Industrial electrical components
  • Troubleshooting assembly or production problems

Experience operating a punch or bender is a plus, but not required.

Physical Requirements

This is an active, hands-on manufacturing position.

Candidates should be comfortable standing, moving materials and working with tools and equipment throughout the workday.

The position requires the ability to safely lift and move more than 50 pounds when needed.

Candidates should also be comfortable operating a tow motor/forklift or willing and able to learn.

The Person We're Looking For

The best person for this job isn't necessarily someone with a specific job title. We're looking for someone who can look at a group of parts, a drawing or an assembly and figure out how things are supposed to come together.

You should be someone who:

  • Likes building and fixing things.
  • Has strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Is comfortable working with your hands every day.
  • Can troubleshoot when something doesn't fit or work as expected.
  • Pays attention to details and quality.
  • Can safely use tools and manufacturing equipment.
  • Is dependable and willing to help wherever needed.
  • Enjoys working in a smaller, specialized manufacturing environment.

Compensation

The expected starting pay range is approximately $20-$22 per hour, depending on experience.

Overtime is paid at time-and-a-half.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong mechanical ability who wants to work in a specialized manufacturing environment building equipment rather than performing repetitive, high-volume assembly work.

I like this positioning better than calling it Technical Warehouse, because the original description says the person needs mechanical/electrical aptitude and should be comfortable with manufactured assemblies, drawings, tools and technical production work.

The phrase I would build the recruiting search around is "someone who can figure out how things go together." That's really the distinction you got from the intake call. You don't just need someone who has worked on an assembly line. You need someone with genuine mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability.
